I'm so glad I decided to check this place out while I was in Sault Ste. Marie! It's definitely in a great location with a really cool view of the locks! I had the Mozzarella Amore sandwich with some of their homemade french fries and a really delicious homemade pasta salad. It was really REALLY delicious!

Awesome lunch! Crab cake panini and Cesar salad were delicious. Service was great as well. Would definitely go back if on the area.

Organic, free range food - how happy I am to have found this place (actually it was recommended but they didn't tell me about the quality of the food). Sounds like they frequently have a wait. I was also recommended to go to maloneys. Karl's is not a pub and is more fine dining instead. Definitely recommend it.

As a recent transplant to the Soo from the Chicago area, all I have heard about from the locals is Karl's. I finally got the chance to have lunch there today, and they were right. From the creamy, rich pumpkin soup to the decadent crab cake panini sandwich, and the endless refills on the delicious coffee, everything was great. Several staff stopped to make sure we were enjoying our food, but just the right amount of attention. The scenery was pretty neat too with a great view of the locks. I will definitely be patronizing Karl's often.

I wouldn't. Ingredient quality is ok but needs less weird flavor combinations. Honey and whitefish should never be this close to each other.

As usual, Yelp reviewers were spot on with this restaurant! Don't let the touristy boat shape fool you, Karl's is an exceptional restaurant in the areas that count. We had a large group in mid week for dinner, and everyone enjoyed their meal, the wine, and the great service. Yes, the restaurant could use some interior updates, but who cares when the food tastes this good. We had spinach artichoke dip to start, and it was creamy and flavorful without being overbearing. It was served with thin toasted baguette slices. I chose the house Malbec and it was excellent. For my entree, I had the pasta Bolognese and a side salad. The sauce was hearty and rich, with a great combination of beef and sausage. The serving size was just right, and I saved room for desert which may have been the best part of the meal... Italian wedding cake. Light, fluffy, crunchy on top, just perfect! Prices are reasonable and in line with the quality. Service was very friendly and professional and although the restaurant was a bit dated inside, it was very clean and comfortable. Next time I'm passing through Sault Ste. Marie, I'll be sure to grab a meal at Karl's again.

Stopped here for dinner after reading all the raving reviews. DH had the maple glazed planked whitefish and I had the beef pasty. He added a Cesar salad to his dinner for $4, which was not worth the price. A mediocre salad. The whitefish was very good, done perfectly with cheddar, herb duchess potatoes and grilled veggies. Both the veggies and potatoes were very good. The pasty was good with very nice crust. The big disappointment was no Italian wedding cake for desert

A must go to for a nice meal and a great view of the lock while dining. The whitefish was superb. Good selections of wines and bottles to buy onsite. Loved the chocolate port.

Wow, what a goofy-looking building! Seriously, one would think that a place that looks like this would be some sort of thematic cartoon-ish fried seafood nightmare. Don't let the architecture fool you, Karl's is actually a truly respectable restaurant that we stumbled upon quite by accident while touring the UP. Located on W Portage right across from the Soo Locks, you'll see large ships pass by along the canal from time to time, which is definitely an added bonus. However, the real star of the show is the food. In reverse order, I'd like to give a hat-tip to the Italian Cream Cake. My wife devoured her whitefish, and I had an excellent bowl of beef barley soup. The service was friendly - we spent several minutes chatting with one of the staff and had a genuinely nice conversation.

I give this place four stars, not because my food was that great. Nor was the atmosphere that appealing for a restaurant. But because it's family owned, my service was great, and u really did love the dessert. :-) I had the walleye sandwich (whitefish not yet available), which sounded great in its description. Unfortunately, its preparation rendered it completely flavorless. Seriously. No flavor. The bread it was on was good, but I didn't want to pay for just two pieces of decent bread :/ The sandwich is served with what seemed like a whopping 8 chips, which were boring. I'll say the pasta cup was a plus. But the remainder of my dish was a major disappointment. I'd definitely go back to try something else on the menu. To give them another shot. I want to like it here!

My husband and I came because the reviews were so good and we were not disappointed. Maple planked whitefish was wonderful. Service was excellent. Would most definitely come here again.

The food has consistently been high quality here. Tonight I had the special - beef roulade. Very tasty and cooked perfectly. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Solid 5 stars in the Soo. This is good food. The place looks a little goofy from the street but don't let that fool you, it is really a quality restaurant. I had read about it and when I came to town to spend an evening with some long time Soo residents, one a 57 year old Soo native I knew it must be good because it was the first place they wanted to go The whitefish was great and my wife had the salmon, she liked hers a lot but my whitefish was probably the best I have ever had and the service was pretty good I finished with the Italian Wedding Cake and it was fantastic This food would easily hold its own in any major city as a 4 but here in the Soo it is a 5 for sure

Happened into Karl's by accident but this is my lucky day. They don't sell beer but have a great wine selection and the buffalo chicken stromboli was out of this world good.

  • Jason K.

We arrived for a late lunch, around 2PM, and were surprised to find the place full with folks waiting to get a table. Lucky for us we were only a party of 2, so got in quickly to one of their two seater tables. This was our first meal in the UP, so we were anxious to try a Pasty. I had the beef and my wife had the chicken. They tasted pretty much like a pot pie. Similar dough and flavors. We didn't try and of the desserts, but they looked like they would be good. Overall, a good place to eat while in town to see the locks.

We love visiting this restaurant when we vacation in the Soo. None of us have ever been disappointed in anything we've tried. Honestly, I'm still dreaming of the bacon wrapped duck breast over creamy polenta I enjoyed last summer. We've tried salads, stromboli, sandwiches, steaks, soups....it's all amazing. The wine is delicious too! We always end with dessert, which is fantastic. The service is always so kind and helpful. They care about their customers. One other thing I absolutely love is that they use their own veggies from their garden!

  • Joshua P.

The Soo is a nice town but the local food options are limited. Karl's Cuisine has a nice atmosphere and delicious menu items including great daily specials and amazing desserts. I'm not kidding. AMAZING desserts. They make a wide array or pastas and sandwich and even make their own veggie chips. Really a great restaurant if you are looking to try some great food while you are in the UP! Hopefully even more local restaurants will up their game in the Soo to match Karl's!

Not the most attractive restaurant from the outside, yet the quality of food makes up for it. The location is actually pretty cool. I could see someone bringing their little guy to watch the massive boats come by through the locks as you eat lunch. I'd say it's an awesome place for young children with table manners since this place is a little more formal than you would expect from the looks from the outside. The daily special of crab mac & cheese was by far something I would travel a half an hour or more for. I had the traditional chicken sandwich with Michigan dried raisins and some sort of tangy mayonnaise/dressing which hit the spot. I definitely will come back. They even provided me a complementary coffee to go since I've already paid at the table. It shows that the staff and ownership value the repeat customer and their experience. Nice job guys.

My husband and I stopped at Karl's after taking a boat tour of the Soo locks. The restaurant is a little bit cheesy looking from the outside as it's shaped like a giant boat. This also makes it a little bit strangely shaped on the inside. We arrived about 1pm on a Wednesday, and the place was pretty full. We were able to sit right away, but there were a couple of larger parties waiting for a bigger table to open up. I had the soup and salad combo with the greek salad and the pork roast soup. Both were delicious. I wasn't sure what to expect with the salad, but the dressing was delicious and the ingredients were all extremely fresh. My husband had the buffalo chicken stromboli. The crust on it was amazing. Really, really good. Our servers were all extremely friendly. Two of the folks working the floor were Karl's children, so it really is still a family place.

My friends & family in SSM have been raving about Karl's & this weekend I got to see why! :) It's kind of a hole-in-the-wall, you might miss it if you didn't know it was there, but once you are inside you can tell you've found a gem. The hostess was warm and friendly, I was impressed by the creative menu, and the service was surprisingly fast considering they had a full house. (We were there at 3 pm on a Friday.) My meal was delicious (I had the Portobello Burger - yay for vegetarian options) and my dining partners seemed very happy with their meals, as well - Italian Stromboli and Lily's Caprese Salad. The salad looked really amazing, next time I plan on trying it. For dessert, we shared Tuxedo Cake and Chocolate Cherry Torte - they were both awesome but the Chocolate Cherry Torte seems to be the star of the dessert platter. This is my new favorite restaurant in SSM.

  • Natalie G.

Gluten free items on the menu! veggies were way too buttery I was looking for a healthy side. Their cheeseburger on a gluten free bun was juicy and flavorful. The beef stroganoff and white fish on a plank my companions had were tasty also. They are pricey for the area but the food is quality. They had a big dessert line up including a flour less chocolate torte which was very rich.

Awesome gourmet food! Clam chowder is yummy. Great fast service, plus the view of the Great Lakes freighters is cool!

  • Nicole B.

Be careful on refills here...charged us $2 per refill of coffee, tea, and soda even when the glass was 3/4 full still. Didn't inform us of that extra charge either until we got the bill. Very frustrating. Just felt nickeled and dimed walking out and it was completely unnecessary. Food was decent but small portions for the price.

We loved Karl's food was exceptional and service was excellent. Liked it so much we went back the next day. Save room for dessert. Bread pudding was to die for and excellent wines. PS Great view.

Possibly the best restaurant in the Sault. Not going to win any design awards but food shows someone in the kitchen cares. My one suggestion is that in trying to be adventuresome (and the UP, although wonderful for many adventures, is not gastronomic destination) there are some slightly misguided flourishes like a sweet sauce on the whitefish sandwich.

  • Chace S.

The food was very tasty and reasonably priced, the staff were friendly and professional, and the atmosphere was nice!

This is based on my experience at lunch. I didn't think this was a great place "for the UP." I thought it was great in general. No, it's not a fancy place inside, but it's simple and clean and neat. And hey - it's Michigan. You aren't up there for what the insides of things look like. Step outside if you need a view :) I had a cup of the cream of broccoli soup and the Elliot's Special Chicken sandwich, which was excellent. The staff was pleasant and the kitchen prompt. I was sent to this place by the owner of the bookstore in town and he raved about it so much I thought perhaps he was on the payroll. But he was right - it is a great little stop and I really hope I can try dinner sometime.

Decided to try Karl's this time on our Soo trip instead of another place we frequent while in Sault Ste Marie. My family found the their food to be delicious and filling. I had the Chicken Club sandwich on grilled asiago bread. It was fantastic! The portions did seem a tiny bit smaller than I was expecting, but that was not a bad thing and left room for us to split a dessert. The atmosphere is quiet and calm. The staff are nice and down to earth. The dinning room and bathrooms are clean and well maintained. We will return again.

  • Brad C.

Confusing mix. I guess for the UP it might be spectacular, but don't expect much. Weird building, weird floor plan, undertrained staff, food tries to be something its not. Two of three entrees in our party were not eaten.

How are late lunch was superb and every dish was delicious. The mushroom soup was the star of the afternoon. We begged for the recipe but Tim, our wonderful waiter, told us that they would fire him if he told us. Also that if he told us he would have to kill us. It was truly a delightful lunch in a most warm and hospitable place. Thank you Tim for your excellent and friendly service.

One of the best places to eat in the Soo. Fine cuisine at affordable prices. I've had salmon, swordfish and chicken all great dishes. The almond rice and deserts are excellent. Highly recommend for a great dinner.

Best food we had while visiting Sault Ste Marie. Service was also excellent. They use only all natural and organic ingredients. We will be back every visit up here. Crab cake panini was awesome.

  • John R.

Pleasant but nothing to write home about. Food was bland but filling. Plus it's their own wine. Yes, Michigan wine. It wasn't horrible, but I don't think California should be worried. Very friendly staff.

  • Kate S.

Our server was great she was sweet and took care of us. The corn chowder was excellent. It was disappointing that the sirloin sandwich mushrooms and onions were premixed (we didn't want mushrooms). Overall the sandwich was okay. My pulled pork sandwich was served cold and not the best. We liked it was family owned and close to the locks.

WOW this place is awesome!!! Absolutely the BEST I have eaten in UP Michigan. Don't be turned away by the outside, this is a foodie haven. I had a delicious local wine made by the owners daughter paired with planked whitefish in a hazelnut cream sauce sprinkled with crunchy panko breading. I also had delicious pumpkin soup. WOWOWOWOW!!!! This definitely goes on my top 20 fav restaurants of all time. Delicious, don't miss out.

Looking for a nice family dinner while checking out the Soo Locks. Called Karl's around 6pm to see if we needed a reservation for 4 around 7:30ish, spoke to Tyler and he was very gracious and told me that around 8pm would work. I said "ok" and we did a little more sightseeing. Tyler called me back around 7:20pm and said that a table opened up and that he would hold it for me and come on down....very impressive...talk about good ol' UP hospitality! Food was above average and wine was tasty. White fish was worth the drive across the Mighty Mac! A little disappointed in the boys chicken strips...I have a feeling that the local Glen's is minus one bag of frozen chicken strips! C'MON!...surely the kiddies deserve quality just like mom and dad. Despite the tendergate situation...I would be back and I recommend this Soo gem.

Very good food, service, menu selection was unique. I wanted a side salad which was not on the menu and they brought it. It had a blueberry vinaigrette that was very good. Highly recommended

  • Michael G.

I gave it three stars because the planked whitefish was awful dry. I'm not a fan of planked fish of any kind. However, the whitefish dip is excellent and I would probably recommend trying something else as everything else on the menu looked delicious.

  • Meredith W.

Karl's is the best restaurant we've found on Michigan. Planked whitefish with Upper Peninsula red wine, bread pudding for dessert, and a view of the locks made for a perfect meal.

    (5)
  • Paul C.

The food was fabulous. The wait staff was attentive and unobtrusive but what I liked is they worked in unison - the effect was not so much dramatic but really spoke of properly trained staff - I really liked it. The chicken cair paravel with Paulas sauce was to die for! Paul and some bridge inspectors fom NYC

Karls Cuisine: The best place in the Soo (Michigan) and the only one for me... I go there every day if theyre open. Sonday is closed, but from Monday to Saturday is open. The food is amazing - the best is to try the daily specials. They have a winery to choose from local wines for your meal. They also offer pop but no beer. But that doesnt matter - every wine is a good choice. This place should get 5 stars if they have table clothes, better silverware and dont serve pop or water in plastic glasses.

This is my favorite place in town to eat. It has a lot of unique dishes, and everything I've tried is fantastic. Their soups, sandwiches and desserts are all fantastic. I haven't been there for dinner, but judging by everything I've had there so far, I'm sure I'd be pleased. 4/8/14 Since my last review, I have had dinner at Karl's. It was FANTASTIC! Very impressive.

I love Karl's! Karl's is located in Sault Ste Marie, one of the northern most ports (?) in the upper peninsula of Michigan. The owner, Karl, used to work at Cedar Campus which is a training site for the organization I work with. He is a genius. I tried the Karl's 1 lb chicken pasty. The gravy was amazing, and the whole thing was hearty and delicious. I also shared an Elliot's chicken sandwich wrap. Amazing! Actually, the chicken wrap is named after a student that I know and he invented it himself. Good stuff. By the end of the month, the college students I work with kept asking me if we could go back!

If you haven't had Karls, you are missing out. The place is run by a really talented chef. The price is not bad. The atmosphere is busy at lunch time, for good reason. The staff usually is efficient and adequate, the actual food is a treat! It is totally worth the price.

A hidden gem in the Soo. I drove by Karl's while it was closed and it looked like nothing more than a boat-shaped coffee shop. I was pleasantly surprised when I went there for dinner. The restaurant is very small and cozy. It does not seat crowds of people. If you want to eat there go early. The decor is very warm and comforting. The owner regularly walks around talking to customers and making sure all it well. Everyone is friendly and helpful and it all seems to flow more smoothly than any restaurant I've been to. The food is nothing short of fantastic. The standard menu is great and there are always rotating specials for the night. Be sure to leave room for dessert as they are equally as good. **Do not go to Karl's expecting to have a beer and be loud and boisterous. They don't serve beer. This is the place you take your wife or girlfriend for a very nice, peaceful dinner and a glass of wine. Go to Karl's for some of the best food you'll find at a restaurant.

First visit to Karl's resulted in a second visit one week later. Great food and great service. The menu has some unique offerings and I would highly recommend this restaurant for lunch or dinner. Very quaint and cozy. Great spot

Very nice UP restaurant and quite surprising for the area. Not your typical tourist cafe. Upscale decor and a good variety of food. Since we went for lunch, soup and sandwich was the choice. The clam chowder was a bit skimpy on the clams and tasted more like potato, it was still very good. Had the basil, tomato, mozzarella panini and it was excellent. Every sandwich comes with the kettle fries and a small side of pasta. They also have a winery and sell it by the glass or the bottle, but it's not anything to rave about. It is no more than novelty wine to buy a bottle as a souvenir for the home team. It's better than a tee shirt or moccasins.

Had lunch here about three weeks ago while on vacation in the U.P. Overall, I really liked Karl's. The lunch selection was very Panera Bread-esque but with more local Michigan ingredients and food options. I had the Elliot's chicken sandwich with a greek salad and my fiancee had the three cheese panini. Everything we had was very tasty, prices were pretty reasonable (spent about $20 on lunch for two) and the waitstaff were very friendly. A few things knocked this down to three stars though: (1) our order was a little long in coming out during a time when the restaurant was not very busy, (2) we got seated waaaaaay in the back next to the dessert case and the server station, and (3) while the restaurant and the bathrooms were very clean, this place could use a little renovation - I felt like I was in a finished basement decorated by someone's tacky grandmother.

  • Bruce T.

This small gem is a great place to eat. The only reason it's not 5 star is they don't have enough tables and they need to expand their wine offerings. Make a reservation if you plan to go on a weekend or a night when the local college has an event. I would skip the crab cakes but go for the oak planked whitefish. The best I have ever eaten. The owner is the head chef and it shows with the quality of the food. The local wine offerings have a little bit to be desired but don't let that stop you.

  • Kate T.

Just had a delicious dinner at Karl's. Featured on the menu tonight were stuffed pork tenderloin and chicken piccata. Both were delicious. Vegetables were fresh and cooked perfectly. The meats were also prepared well. Portions are generous. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. the owners are often seen visiting with guests. This is not frozen reheated food, this is the real deal! If you want excellent food at a reasonable price go to Karl's Cuisine, you won't be disappointed.

If you want high quality meats and seafood, fresh produce and awesome desserts, this is the place in Sault Ste Marie. We've tried all the seafood on the menu-all are terrific. Wines are produced by the owner-family and very good. Two generations of family involved in business, a sure sign that you'll be well-served.

Karl's is definitely my go to restaurant in Sault Ste Marie. Up until recently, Karl's served delicious lunches. They have just recently started serving dinner on the weekends and also serve wine now. The soups change daily and are a definite must have. I have had several of the paninis, the stromboli, the pasty, and a couple of the salads. All were delicious. There also daily specials, which are always exciting. I love see what the cooks come up with each day. We have been to dinner once and had the special that night, which was a shrimp mousse stuffed rainbow trout. It was served over caramelized onions and a pecan rice. We also tried the Italian Wedding cake, which was to die for, although I am not absolutely sure that they make their desserts on sight. The service is always excellent. The prices are bit high for the area, but I also think the food is a few notches above the local fare.

  • Liza G.

Karl's was delicious! Went there last weekend on a trip to the UP to visit family and we were all impressed. The food was more upscale than what you see at many UP restaurants, but prices were still very reasonable. It was nice to get something different after eating at diners all weekend. We had dinner, wine and dessert on a Friday night and everything was excellent. At our table we tried the grilled whitefish special, stromboli and pizza. No one was disappointed. The only thing that threw me off about this place was the atmosphere. It seemed extremely casual and the decor was definitely lacking. But it did have a great view of the water and the large boats coming in.

Excellent food! Whitefish was the best ever. Beautiful presentation of food and service was wonderful. The restaurant sits across from the locks. Definitely a memorable dinner.

Based on the reviews on yelp we decided to try this place for dinner this past Friday while on a family trip. Whitefish was excellent! And a huge portion, definitely should have shared it was so huge. Soup was tasty and the wine selection was nice. They do not know how to cook steak though! Ordered medium-rare, first steak was well done and sent back, second steak was medium-well but not sent back because clearly nothing was going to be accomplished by sending it back. Nice staff, good deserts.

I have never been disappointed when I've been to Karl's. From Lunch to Dinner and Dessert you can't go wrong. The lunch menu is filled with tasty different sandwiches and salads. For dinner they have prime rib with your choice of different homemade sauces, pasta dishes, Stromboli (try the buffalo chicken), and some fish entrees as well. The desserts there are yummy and homemade, love their triple chocolate mousse cake. We always make it a point to visit when out of town relatives come. Not to mention the view of the locks and watching the freighters pass by is awesome. Give Karl's a try they truly are delicious.

  • Russ P.

Karls had been suggested by friends a few times, so I decided to try lunch today and check it out. We ordered a reuben and a asian wrap. The service was friendly, knew all the specials (even though they werent posted yet) and quick to bring drinks. The atmosphere is ok, not exactly upscale, but nice. Karls has a very good view of the locks and we were able to see 2 freighters while we ate. When we got our meals, I was a bit dissapointed with the portions size. The sandwich was a small one, served with a handful of regular and root vegetable chips, and a small, savory pasta salad. Since I dont really care for chips, all I can say is, they were a little better than normal. The pasta salad was ok, but did not really stand out. The reuben however is the main point here. It was small, as I said, but beyond that, it was nothing special, and kind of tame for a reuben. A reuben is a bold sandwich, full of flavor. This had flavor, but most of it was coming from the toasted sesame seeds and sunflower seeds in the bread. What were these things doing in a reuben??? In the end, the meal was not that special for a place that offers "cuisine". I will say this, the dessert wine they sell called indulgence was great as an aperitif when I tried it a few years ago. I will be going back for dinner service and see if the up the ante in the future. I am not trying to be too critical here, but I can assure you, the 4 1/2 star rating is probably a bit much and might be due to the lack of other options around the area. In a major city, Im not sure this place would receive such accolades. And there IS a better reuben in town.

7/12/2011 - Just across from big Soo, is this wonderful, family owned and run place. The waitress was the daughter, and the son and wife work in the restaurant as Karl works the magic in the kitchen. The menu has lots of interesting, tasty concoctions which builds up your expectations, then they bring it out and exceed those expectations. If I lived in the area, this would be a weekly or bi-weekly visit for me. Would not be surprised if it ever made the cut to be on Guy's Triple D show.

The service was excellent and everyone's meal was top notch. As other reviewers have said, the pasty was great (reviewed by my father-in-law)! I had the maple planked whitefish with lemon pepper tarragon butter. I am a butter fan and this didnt disappoint! I also had seasonal vegetables grown from their garden which were amazing! We also shared desserts with the italian wedding cake being the big hit.

I was really impressed with Karl's! A nice little place. The building was a bit odd ("boat" themed place from earlier days as some tourist destination), but very nice inside. Tasteful, simple decor was very inviting. The hostess and waitress were both helpful and friendly. While Karl's only serves wine, it is actually homemade wine they make themselves! Not bad stuff and pretty reasonably priced (they only serve wine, no beer). For dinner, the pumpkin soup was a tad thick, but good. The whitefish (baked and served on a maple plank) was excellent, as were the sides. I was too full for dessert, but they looked really awesome. I was really pleased that I ventured out on the recommendations of locals to give Karl's a try, as the building would have turned me off thinking it was a serious restaurant. It is and I look forward to my next trip to the area to try it again.

This place was recommended as the best in the city. The crab cake appetizers were just ok, kind of small, bread not needed, sauce tasteless (good crab cakes don't even need a sauce). Salads - house and Greek - were very good. One of their specialties was whitefish, and guess what they were out of (and they're on Lake Superior, for pete's sake!). My husband's salmon was on the dry side, served with the same tasteless sauce as the crab cakes. His veggies were nicely done, but tasteless. Salmon was served on toast points (why?), with rice or potato and bread: too many carbs. My pasty was 90% dough, and the chunks of beef were neither tender nor flavorful. The locally made wine was ordinary, and we tried most of the reds. Overall, a nice place, good location, service was fine. I've just had much better food. I wanted to really like this place, but sorry, Karl, all you get is 3 stars, and that's pushing it.
